Thermal Transfer vs Direct Thermal
Ever wonder how to tell the difference and why there is a difference?
Thermal transfer labels require a ribbon when printing. Thermal transfer labels are the preferred choice when it comes to printing variable information on demand and for when the application demands a durable, long-lasting label. Thermal transfer labels are available in paper or syntheic formats. The synthetic thermal transfer labels are the ideal solution for applications that require resistance to abrasion, moisture, chemicals, heat or tearing. The resulting label is fairly scratch resistant which is how you can tell immediately.
Direct thermal labels do not require a ribbon to print. The heat from the print head darkens the label as it passes through, much like a receipt printer. Direct thermal labels are more economical. When cost is a factor and the longevity of the label is not a concern direct thermal labels are the best choice. The downside is that they scratch easily (quick test indication) and they turn yellow from light/sunlight over time, causing the print to fade.

Thermal Transfer Ribbons
Thermal transfer ribbons come in 3 types, suitable for different applications.
- Wax ribbon - best for general purpose labeling
- Wax/Resin ribbons - good choice for moderate scratch, abrasion and mild chemical resistance
- Resin ribbons - provide the best performance in harsh environmental conditions
Cleaning supplies are not printer-specific and can be used to clean any thermal printhead. It is important to keep the printhead clean for optimal printing performance.
